Lotus Cars Malaysia has revealed pricing for the all-new Emira, which first made its debut earlier in July this year. For now, there’s just one variant available, the 3.5 V6 First Edition, priced at RM1,131,800 million in Peninsular Malaysia and RM456,900 in Langkawi.
Keep in mind that these prices exclude on-the-road costs, insurance and optional extras (there are a few offered). Additionally, production of the Emira will only start in spring 2022 at Lotus’ upgraded facility in Hethel, so customers can expect their cars to arrive sometime after March next year.
The Emira (codenamed Type 131) serves as a replacement for the existing Elise, Exige and Evora, all of which will cease production by the end of this year. Pronounced as “Eh-meer-ah,” the sports car is Lotus’ last model to be powered by an internal-combustion engine before the company goes all electric.
Built on the Lotus Sports Car Architecture (referred internally as the Elemental) – the brand’s bonded extruded aluminium platform – the Emira comes in one of two chassis settings that customers can choose from at no additional cost. The first is Tour, which packs in touring suspension along with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport tyres, while the other option is Sport that comes with sports suspension and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.
Powering the 3.5 V6 First Edition is a Toyota-sourced 2GR-FE 3.5 litre V6 with an Edelbrock 1740 supercharger that makes 405 PS (400 hp). Peak torque is 420 Nm with a six-speed manual, or 430 Nm with a six-speed automatic, with the latter costing an additional RM15,000.
Both transmissions are made by Aisin and result in the same top speed of 288 km/h+, although the automatic is marginally quicker in a 0-100 km/h sprint, taking 4.2 seconds compared to the manual’s 4.3 seconds.
In terms of standard equipment, the 3.5 V6 First Edition comes with 20-inch forged alloy wheels in a 10-spoke V-design, LED headlamps, LED taillights, front and rear parking sensors, automatic climate control, keyless entry and engine start, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The infotainment is paired with a 340-watt KEF sound system, while other items found in the interior include white ambient lighting, an Alcantara headliner, a black leather steering wheel and powered front seats with memory function.
There are also advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like adaptive cruise control, anti-collision system, fatigue alert, road sign information, vehicle speed limiter, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist.
Other cost options aside from the automatic transmission include an Alcantara steering wheel (black, grey, yellow or red contrast stitching) for RM2,800, a Scorpion vehicle tracker system for RM5,800 as well as the Black Pack, which gives the car’s cantrails, side mirror caps, rear Lotus badge and tailpipe finishers a black finish for RM8,000.

2022 Mazda BT-50 Pick-up Truck and MX-30 EV or CX-30 CKD Coming to Malaysia Soon – Preview on Nov 29
Mazda distributor Bermaz has released a teaser of two upcoming models, which it will preview on November 29. The sole image only shows silhouettes of the new cars, but we can see that they are an SUV of some kind as well as a pick-up truck.
The identity of the pick-up is pretty obvious, because Mazda makes only one – it’s the new BT-50, based on the latest Isuzu D-Max. It has a unique exterior design but shares the same cabin and mechanicals as its sibling, including the 150 PS 1.9 litre and 190 PS 3.0 litre turbodiesel engines and six-speed manual and automatic gearbox options.
It’s the unknown SUV that’s a little harder to discern. The shape appears to belong to the CX-30 at first glance (Bermaz is working on CKD local assembly for the car, after all), but look closely at the rear end and you’ll see a tiny bump reminiscent of a round taillight – exactly like the ones on the MX-30.
This makes sense, given that the electric vehicle was due to be launched before the CKD CX-30, alongside the BT-50. In fact, the MX-30 was supposed to have arrived in Malaysia more than a year ago in October 2020, but the timeline has obviously been shifted, likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
More recently, a Maybank Investment Bank research article reiterated that the MX-30 will be coming, subject to Mazda’s approval and the government’s EV policy (which has since been revealed). It also confirmed that the car will be introduced in fully electric form, rather than the mild hybrid model also available in certain markets. To recap, the MX-30 EV is powered by a 145 PS front motor, juiced by a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery to deliver range of 200 km on the WLTP cycle.
Don’t discount the CKD CX-30, however – last we checked, production of the crossover was due to start in December ahead of the 2022 on-sale date. Expect the car to be offered with the same range of engines – a 164 PS 2.0 litre Skyactiv-G petrol four-cylinder and a 116 PS 1.8 litre Skyactiv-D turbodiesel.

Selangor Aiming to Install 10,000 EV Charging Stations by 2025 – First 1,000 Units Expected to Be Ready in 2022
The Selangor state government has announced it is aiming to install 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the state by 2025, with the first 1,000 stations expected to be ready next year, according to the Selangor Journal.
The ambitious plan was outlined by Selangor MB Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari earlier today. Speaking at the tabling of the 2022 Selangor Budget at the state legislative assembly, he said the state is looking to pioneer EV usage, and the development of a charging infrastructure would help expand that scope in faster fashion.
Amirudin said that the state government and private parties would collaborate on the project, which will involve an investment value of RM10 million. It was not detailed what type of chargers would be utilised or what rates, if any, consumers would be expected to pay for charging.
He did however say that incentives would be provided to businesses and industries that invest in EV infrastructure projects, and there would be no public parking charges imposed on EVs next year. “The incentives include a reduction of business fees and assessment tax. Apart from that, parking fees which come under the jurisdiction of the local authorities will also be waived for EV users in 2022,” he explained.
The state’s plan to develop an EV charging infrastructure sounds timely, given the upcoming EV push announced by the government during Budget 2022. In the outlined plan, EVs are set to be completely exempt from import duty, excise duty, sales tax as well as road tax for a period of two years, starting from January 1, 2022.
